• The DOJ is suing New York over its sanctuary immigration laws, citing violations of federal law.
  • Attorney General Pam Bondi criticized the Green Light Law, which allows undocumented migrants to obtain driver’s licenses and limits federal access to DMV data.
  • This lawsuit follows similar action against Illinois as the DOJ continues to target sanctuary policies nationwide.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed a lawsuit against the State of New York, citing its controversial sanctuary immigration laws. The legal action specifically names Gov. Kathy Hochul, State Attorney General Letitia James, and DMV Commissioner Mark Schroeder, all prominent Democrats.

DOJ Accuses New York of Defying Federal Immigration Laws

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the lawsuit with strong words, stating, “New York has chosen to prioritize illegal aliens over American citizens. It stops, it stops today. You will be held accountable if you do not follow federal law.”

Bondi pointed to New York’s Green Light Law, which allows migrants living in the country illegally to obtain driver’s licenses. The law also blocks the Department of Motor Vehicles from sharing applicant information with federal authorities.

Law Enforcement Concerns Raised

“Law enforcement officers cannot check their identity if they pull them over. They don’t have access to their background,” Bondi explained. She argued that this creates a dangerous situation for officers, leaving them vulnerable in potentially life-threatening encounters.

To emphasize the consequences, Bondi shared the tragic story of Kayla Hamilton, a 20-year-old woman who was raped and murdered by an MS-13 gang member from El Salvador. The individual, smuggled into the U.S., had been apprehended by Border Patrol but was later sent to Maryland to live with a sponsor.

“Her murderer was only living there for five days before he viciously strangled her, raped her, and left her on the floor like trash,” Hamilton’s mother, Tammy Nobles, said.

A Pattern of Lawsuits Against Sanctuary Laws

This is not the first time the DOJ has targeted sanctuary policies. Bondi recently announced a similar lawsuit against Illinois, suing the state, Cook County, and Chicago for laws restricting cooperation with federal immigration officers. Illinois Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker defended the state’s policies, claiming they align with federal law.

“We did it to Illinois, strike one. Strike two is New York. And if you are a state not complying with federal law, you’re next. Get ready,” Bondi warned.

What’s Next for New York Leaders?

As of now, none of New York’s leaders named in the suit have issued public statements.
