Hamas confirmed plans to release Israeli hostages following "positive" talks with mediators, despite earlier delays. This announcement comes after Donald Trump issued a stark warning, promising that “all hell” would “break out” if hostages were not freed by the weekend.

Hamas Moves Forward with Hostage Release

Hamas had previously suspended the latest prisoner exchange, accusing Israel of violating the truce agreement. However, the group now says it is committed to fulfilling the deal. In a statement, Hamas declared it would “implement the deal” as initially signed, ensuring hostages are exchanged according to the agreed timetable. Mediators from Egypt and Qatar reportedly stepped in, pledging to resolve outstanding issues and “fill gaps” in the agreement.

Trump’s Ultimatum Sparks Action

The announcement comes on the heels of Donald Trump delivering a fiery ultimatum. Speaking Tuesday while signing executive orders, Trump warned Hamas that if hostages were not released by noon Saturday, “all bets were off” and that severe consequences would follow. While emphasizing that he was “speaking for myself,” Trump noted that Israel maintained authority over whether the ceasefire continued.

Previous Delays in Hostage Exchange

Hamas originally delayed the February 15 exchange, citing Israeli violations of the truce. Allegations included Israel targeting displaced individuals with gunfire and shelling while delaying their return to northern Gaza. Hamas demanded Israel “compensate for the past weeks” before proceeding.

Ongoing Prisoner Swaps

So far, five exchanges have occurred, resulting in the release of 21 Israeli hostages in return for over 730 Palestinian prisoners. Saturday’s planned exchange is expected to free three more Israelis in return for hundreds of Palestinian detainees.
