• The VA laid off over 1,000 employees, including probationary staff, sparking outrage and feelings of betrayal among workers.
  • VA Secretary Doug Collins defended the cuts, redirecting $93 million annually toward veterans’ healthcare and services.
  • Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency is auditing VA contracts to ensure operational efficiency.

The Veterans Administration (VA) is under fire after nationwide layoffs slashed over 1,000 jobs, including positions at Atlanta’s VA Health Care System. Though the local VA declined to specify numbers, terminated employees feel betrayed by the decision. This sweeping measure, announced late Thursday by the administration, has sparked outrage and left many questioning its motives.

Layoffs Target Probationary Employees

Among those impacted was former U.S. Army First Sergeant Nelson Feliz, Sr., who received a termination email citing his performance. Feliz, a long-time VA employee who recently started a probationary role, was stunned by the abrupt decision. He called the layoffs a “Pearl Harbor,” saying, “We’ve been mistreated. We’ve been betrayed.” Feliz plans to appeal the termination as he had already filed for retirement in 2027.

Trump Administration Defends Layoffs

The layoffs, announced under the Trump administration, were defended as a necessary step by newly appointed VA Secretary Doug Collins, a former Georgia Congressman. Collins stated that the decision, though difficult, was essential to redirect $93 million annually toward veterans’ health care, benefits, and services. The VA asserted that probationary employees were selected to ensure efficiency and prioritize care for veterans.

In a video posted on the VA website, Collins addressed rumors that the cuts might extend to veterans’ benefits. He denied these claims and emphasized the agency’s commitment to improving operations.

Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency Steps In

Collins also welcomed the involvement of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in auditing VA contracts. He praised their work, stating, “They are doing what they’re supposed to be doing – ensuring efficiency and focusing on what matters most, which is providing veterans with the care they deserve.”

Outrage Sparks Among Employees

The layoffs have left employees feeling blindsided. Many, including Feliz, question why long-serving staff were targeted. “Why? Why do this?” Feliz asked, voicing the frustration of many who feel the decision disregarded their dedication to the VA and its mission.
