A Maryland court has ordered blogger Jack LaSota, known as “Ziz,” to be held without bail due to her alleged leadership of a cult-like group tied to six killings across three states. The group, known as the Zizians, has sparked a cross-country investigation into their violent activities. Authorities say their crimes range from the murder of a U.S. Border Patrol agent to the killing of landlords and even family members.

Blogger Arrest Sparks Wide Investigation

LaSota, 34, of Berkeley, California, was arrested alongside Michelle Zajko, 32, of Media, Pennsylvania, and Daniel Blank, 26, of Sacramento, California. They face charges such as trespassing, hindering, and possession of firearms in a vehicle. Their arrests occurred after a Frostburg, Maryland resident reported three suspicious individuals camping on their property with box trucks.

Police found weapons, including a rifle and handgun, during the arrests. Two suspects wore gun belts, while Zajko resisted arrest and carried a handgun. Officials linked the firearms to the double murder of Zajko’s parents in Pennsylvania, further deepening the investigation.

Who Are the Zizians?

The Zizians, led by LaSota, reportedly consist of young, intelligent computer scientists who share anarchist ideologies. Their online writings explore topics such as radical veganism, gender identity, and artificial intelligence. Notably, LaSota’s blog, under the name Ziz, delves into dark and violent theories, including the idea that the brain’s hemispheres possess separate genders and murderous tendencies.

The group’s activities escalated to violence, including the January 20 shooting of U.S. Border Patrol Agent David Maland near the Canadian border. Felix Bauckholt, a passenger in the suspect’s car, also died in the shootout, while driver Teresa Youngblut now faces federal firearms charges.

A Trail of Violence

The Zizians are linked to a series of killings, including:

  • November 2022: A California landlord survived an attack by the group.
  • December 2022: Zajko’s parents were murdered in Pennsylvania.
  • January 2023: The landlord was killed, just days before testifying against the group.
  • January 17: Another landlord, Curtis Lind, was fatally stabbed in Vallejo, California.

Authorities believe the guns recovered during the arrests were purchased by individuals connected to these crimes. The investigation reveals a web of violent acts tied to the Zizians’ radical beliefs.

What Motivated This Group?

While the group’s exact intentions remain unclear, their writings often criticized perceived enemies, including rationalist groups exploring human cognition and AI. Their escalating violence has left law enforcement scrambling to piece together their motives.
