An Ohio woman, Brittany Cole, 37, has been sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after 16 years, for the murder of her 80-year-old father-in-law, David Cole Sr., on December 25, 2024. She pleaded guilty to murder and gross abuse of a corpse. Authorities revealed that she administered a fatal overdose of medications before hiding the body for over a month.

Fatal Overdose and Concealment

According to the Muskingum County Prosecutor's Office, Brittany Cole gave Cole Sr. six capsules of Tylenol with codeine and ZzzQuil, fully aware that the combination would be lethal. The day after his death, she informed family members that he had "moved to Cincinnati." Subsequently, she and her family went on a weeklong vacation to Orlando, Florida, while the victim’s body was left in their home.

When her husband, David Cole Jr., 44, discovered his father’s body on January 8, Brittany was attending nursing school. The investigation revealed incriminating text messages between the couple discussing "the smell and disposal plans" for the body. Moreover, prosecutors uncovered a Google search Brittany made on December 25: “When someone dies how long does it take for the body to start smelling.”

Discovery of the Body

Cole Jr. initially moved his father’s body from a sunroom to a shed on the property, wrapping it in a mattress cover and a tarp. Prosecutors stated that he was also caught on camera on January 8 ordering a mattress cover from Amazon. The discovery of the decomposing body in the shed confirmed their attempts to hide the crime.

Financial Motive Revealed

Authorities determined the motive behind the killing was financial. Cole Jr., who held power of attorney over his father, continued to receive and spend the elder Cole’s Social Security benefits after the murder. This financial gain was believed to have driven the couple’s actions.

Charges Against David Cole Jr.

Cole Jr. faces six felony charges, including two counts of tampering with evidence, abuse of a corpse, and obstructing justice. He has not yet been arraigned, and further developments are expected in his case.
