Federal prosecutors have arrested two alleged leaders of a dangerous criminal organization accused of smuggling over 20,000 individuals from Guatemala to the U.S. without legal status. The arrests signify a major blow to one of the largest human smuggling networks in the country, which has been operational for over 12 years.

Who Was Arrested?

Eduardo Domingo Renoj-Matul, also known as “Turko,” and Cristobal Mejia-Chaj, his lieutenant, were detained in Los Angeles last Friday. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, both men pleaded not guilty to multiple charges related to smuggling migrants across the border over the course of five years. A federal judge has ordered them jailed without bond until their trial in April.

Renoj-Matul was identified as the head of the organization, which primarily smuggled individuals from Guatemala to the United States. For fees ranging from $15,000 to $18,000, migrants were transported through Mexico, and for an additional fee, taken to cities like Los Angeles and Phoenix. Unfortunately, those unable to pay were reportedly held in a stash house near downtown Los Angeles, where they faced inhumane conditions.

Tragic Impacts of the Smuggling Operation

Federal prosecutors revealed the organization’s reckless disregard for human life, which resulted in the deaths of seven migrants, including a 4-year-old child, during a vehicle crash in Oklahoma last November. The driver, Jose Paxtor-Oxlaj, has been in custody since the accident and now faces charges in California as well.

Another key ringleader, Helmer Obispo-Hernandez, believed to be in Guatemala, also faces charges as one of the organization's supervisors.

Acting United States Attorney Joseph T. McNally condemned the smuggling operation, stating, "These smuggling organizations have no regard for human life, and their conduct kills." The arrests represent a vital step in dismantling this dangerous network.
