Renowned filmmaker Tyler Perry is back with a gripping new thriller, Duplicity, that merges entertainment with an important message. While Perry describes the movie as a wild ride, he emphasizes that its core explores racial injustice. However, he’s quick to clarify that not every moment in the film is meant to be overly political.
“If you take something meaningful away, that’s great. But if you simply enjoy the story, that’s just as good,” Perry explained during an interview with Yahoo Entertainment.

The film follows Marley, played by Kat Graham, a high-powered attorney investigating the killing of her best friend’s husband. The man, an unarmed Black individual, was fatally shot by a white police officer. But as Marley digs deeper, she uncovers unexpected twists that challenge everything she thought she knew.
Perry, who wrote and directed the movie, shared his inspiration for the narrative. "I got tired of seeing movements and hashtags being exploited for financial or political gain," he revealed. He wanted to create a story that encouraged audiences to think critically and examine both sides of a complex issue.

A Unique Approach to True-Crime Drama
True-crime stories captivate audiences, but Perry deliberately avoided making Duplicity feel like a documentary. Instead, he leaned on fictional storytelling to let viewers immerse themselves without the weight of watching real-life events.
"I wanted people to feel and reflect, without focusing on the reality of watching an actual person’s tragedy," Perry stated. "This approach allows the narrative’s twists and turns to shine while still resonating deeply."
The Powerful Final Message
By the movie’s end, Marley delivers a compelling speech about racial injustice becoming an over-politicized issue. Perry believes the solution lies in finding common ground.
"Every answer we need is somewhere in the middle," he said. "The extremes on both sides create barriers. Real change happens when we meet halfway, have open conversations, and work together for solutions."
What’s Inspiring Perry to Keep Creating
At 55 years old, Perry admits he’s beginning to think about stepping back from his whirlwind career. But for now, he finds motivation in the young actors coming through his Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta.
“They have such bright eyes, incredible work ethic, and they’re stepping into a world they once thought was unreachable," Perry shared. "Seeing them live out their dreams is what keeps me going.”
