Kimbal Musk, brother of Elon Musk, openly criticized President Donald Trump's tariffs on X (formerly Twitter) this week, describing them as a “structural, permanent tax on the American consumer.” Musk also referred to the president as “the most high-tax American President in generations.” This criticism comes as the administration faces growing backlash over its sweeping trade policies, which have triggered market instability and raised concerns among business leaders.
Tariffs’ Long-Term Impact
Musk argued that even if these tariffs succeed in reshoring jobs, they will increase costs for Americans. “Prices will stay high, and the tax on consumption will remain because we are simply not as competitive at manufacturing,” Musk posted on X. His comments reflect frustration within the business community toward the administration’s trade strategy, which many view as economically burdensome.
Who is Kimbal Musk?
Kimbal Musk, known for his entrepreneurial ventures, is more than Elon Musk’s younger brother. He owns a restaurant chain called The Kitchen and serves on the board of Tesla. He’s also co-founded innovative startups like Square Roots, focused on urban farming, and Nova Sky Stories, a drone light show company.
Fallout for Tesla
Meanwhile, Elon Musk, a key advisor to President Trump tasked with overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has also expressed discontent with the administration. Tesla, heavily reliant on global supply chains, has suffered under tariff policies. Its stock has fallen 42% this year, marking its worst quarter since 2022.
Over the weekend, Elon Musk criticized Trump’s trade advisor Peter Navarro, alleging he lacks practical business experience. In a sharp post on X, Musk stated that a PhD in economics from Harvard is “a bad thing, not a good thing.” He further accused Navarro of not building “anything.” In response, Navarro dismissed Musk as a “car assembler,” reliant on parts from overseas suppliers.
Kimbal Musk’s Political Contributions
While Elon Musk has supported President Trump, Kimbal Musk has taken a different path, donating to Unite America PAC and the Libertarian Party. These groups advocate for nonpartisan election reform and government functionality. According to Federal Election Commission records, Kimbal’s contributions illustrate his divergent political philosophy, contrasting sharply with his brother’s.

Neither Musk lived here (USA) in the 1980’s when we had tariffs and the country was flourishing. The Clinton the the trade agreements and slowly things fell apart.Thousands upon thousands of manufacutring firms were put out of business or moved their production to the Orient (mainly China). Now the middle class has been decimated, most moving to the poor class. And now, other than food, you can’t find anything in stores that isn’t “Made in China”, and the overall quality is garbage. Spend more, just get more widgets on nothing but garbage. Everything breaks in a year or two.
The tariffs will hurt at first, but the only way to make the USA truly prosperous it to bring back all those thousands of companies and millions of jobs that got sent to China. Problem is we needed this done in the 90’s, it’s 30 years too late. But better late than never, time will tell.
Elon is lightyears ahead of his younger brother.
