President Trump has directed the U.S. military to take control of federal land along the southern border, spanning California, New Mexico, and Arizona, in a move to combat illegal immigration. According to a memorandum titled “Military Mission for Sealing the Southern Border of the United States and Repelling Invasions”, this land will be designated as National Defense Areas for military use.

Military Role in Border Security

The memorandum instructs the Departments of Defense, Interior, Agriculture, and Homeland Security to transfer jurisdiction of the land—including the Roosevelt Reservation, established by Theodore Roosevelt in 1907—to the military. These areas will now host border-barrier construction, monitoring equipment, and other defense operations deemed "reasonably necessary" to secure the border.

President Trump emphasized the urgency, writing, “Our southern border is under attack from a variety of threats.” He added that the military must play a greater role in security measures than before.

The Roosevelt Reservation is a narrow, 60-foot strip of land along the border, reserved explicitly for protection efforts. With this new directive, the military gains an active presence in these areas to address challenges like illegal crossings, drug trafficking, and human smuggling.
