- Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) faced backlash for trying to embed staff in the nonprofit Vera Institute of Justice, sparking concerns about government overreach.

- Musk's criticism of NGOs and fraud claims have heightened tensions, leaving nonprofits on alert.
Elon Musk’s controversial Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) is under fire after attempting to embed staff in the independent nonprofit Vera Institute of Justice. This bold move, according to Vera, raises critical questions about government overreach into civil society. The nonprofit, which focuses on criminal justice reform, shared concerns about the implications of this encounter and issued a warning to other organizations.
On April 11, Nate Cavanaugh from Doge sent an email demanding a meeting with Vera to discuss embedding a Doge team within the nonprofit. Vera staff, surprised by the request, agreed to a call despite their government funding being terminated just a week earlier. This unexpected development highlights Doge’s growing influence and its recent focus on independent organizations.
Doge Targets Nonprofits Amid Rising Tensions
The meeting between Vera and Doge staffers took place shortly after Vera’s $5 million federal contract was abruptly canceled by the Department of Justice. According to Vera’s vice president, Insha Rahman, Doge staff seemed unaware of the funding cut during the call. Rahman also noted that Doge had no clear legal authority to investigate their organization, calling the attempt “an intimidation tactic targeting the nonprofit sector.”
Doge staffers reportedly explained plans to assign teams to any organization receiving congressional funding. However, when asked about their authority, Doge attorney Justin Aimonetti declined to provide clarification. This encounter, paired with Musk’s public attacks on NGOs, has left many nonprofits on edge.
Musk’s Public Criticism of NGOs Fuels Concerns
Musk has repeatedly claimed, without evidence, that NGOs receiving federal contracts are rife with fraud. Last month, he posted on X, “The Democrat government-funded NGO scam might be the biggest theft of taxpayer money ever.” This rhetoric has sparked widespread fear within the nonprofit sector, as many perceive Doge’s actions as part of a broader campaign against organizations that do not align with the administration’s ideology.

Vera, which operates with a $45 million annual budget funded primarily by private donors, has also been targeted by right-wing media for its progressive stances on criminal justice reform. Rahman argues that this media narrative may have motivated Doge to scrutinize their operations.
Nonprofits Warned to Prepare for Similar Incidents
While Doge backed off its request after learning of Vera’s funding termination, the nonprofit is urging other organizations to stay vigilant. “We’re sharing this information broadly with nonprofits that receive federal funding,” Vera stated. “It’s essential to expose these intimidation tactics that undermine civil society.”
The White House, however, denied Doge’s intent to embed within nonprofits. A spokesperson told the Washington Post that Doge’s focus is specifically on organizations receiving significant federal funding.

DOGE is focusing on fraud and waste wherever government money is involved. Good for him
