- Julius Bishop, convicted of assault and other charges in a 2021 domestic violence case, has been released after nearly four years and plans to appeal, alleging misconduct by his accuser, Ashley Blackwell, a magistrate in North Carolina.
- Key evidence included security footage showing violence and threats, but Bishop’s attorney argues some charges, like strangulation, were overstated and influenced by Blackwell’s position in the legal system.
- The case raises concerns about systemic bias and abuse of power, with allegations that Blackwell used her role to manipulate the legal process, fueling questions about fairness and accountability in the justice system.
Julius Bishop, 49, has been released from jail after serving nearly four years following his conviction on charges of assault, strangulation, and violating a protective order. The case, stemming from a domestic violence incident in 2021 involving his former partner Ashley Blackwell, has raised questions of justice and systemic bias. Bishop, who maintains his innocence, plans to appeal the convictions, alleging abuse of power and misconduct by Blackwell, a magistrate in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
On April 5, a jury convicted Bishop on all charges except stalking, for which he was acquitted after less than two hours of deliberation. His attorney, Samuel Randall, argues that the charges were exaggerated and influenced by Blackwell’s position in the legal system. Randall has confirmed that the appeal will focus on credibility concerns and allegations of misconduct by Blackwell.

A Violent Relationship and Key Evidence
The charges date back to a July 2021 domestic dispute that ended the couple's relationship. Once discussing plans of starting a family, the pair’s tensions erupted when Bishop accused Blackwell of infidelity. Security footage presented in court showed Bishop striking Blackwell with a phone, dragging her, and choking her while making threats. Prosecutors used the footage as key evidence, along with testimony that Bishop sent a topless photo of Blackwell to a coworker without her consent. Blackwell filed a domestic violence protective order the next day.
While acknowledging the video evidence, Randall countered that some charges, particularly strangulation, were overstated. “I’m not here to sell you that his actions were reasonable,” he told jurors, but argued that the severity of the charges did not align with the evidence.
Claims of Abuse of Power

Bishop has consistently claimed that Blackwell used her position as a magistrate to manipulate the legal system against him. In an 18-minute 911 call made before his arrest, Bishop insisted, “A magistrate is going to set me up,” denying that he ever physically harmed Blackwell.
These allegations were supported by a 2023 complaint filed by another magistrate, Cheryl Ivery, who accused Blackwell of blurring personal and professional boundaries. Ivery stated that Blackwell initially told her that Bishop had not touched her during the argument but later filed charges. She also claimed that Blackwell used her connections to influence a top judge, Elizabeth Trosch, who eventually recused herself after issuing the protective order against Bishop.
Justice or Bias?
The case has highlighted concerns over systemic bias in cases involving individuals in positions of legal authority. During his time in jail, Bishop maintained his innocence, sharing his story with reporters and court officials through letters. His release has been celebrated by family and supporters but raises broader questions about fairness and accountability in the justice system.

Prosecutor Terra Varnes painted a different picture of Bishop, describing him as a man "bent on revenge" who escalated from violence to violating court orders and destroying property.
What’s Next?
Though Bishop has been released, the fight is far from over. His appeal will likely bring further scrutiny to the case, including allegations of misconduct and abuse of power. For now, questions about justice and bias remain unresolved.
