Tina Knowles, mother of global superstar Beyoncé, is urging women to stay vigilant about their mammogram appointments after revealing her own battle with stage 1 breast cancer. In an exclusive interview with People, Knowles shared her diagnosis and how it served as a wake-up call for early detection and self-care.
A Life-Changing Diagnosis
Knowles revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer in her left breast last July, just as she and Beyoncé were launching their Cécred hair-care line. At the same time, she was completing the manuscript for her memoir, “Matriarch.” Despite her busy schedule, doctors discovered the cancer early, prompting her to reflect on how easily health check-ups can fall by the wayside.
“I struggled with whether I would share that journey [in the book], because I’m very private,” Knowles shared. “But I decided to share it because I think it’s a lot of lessons in it for other women.”
A Missed Appointment with Consequences
One key lesson Knowles emphasized was the importance of staying on top of routine screenings. She admitted she had missed a mammogram appointment two years earlier, delayed by the chaos of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I forgot that I didn’t go to get my test two years before I thought I had because COVID came, and they canceled me,” she explained. “And I just thought I had done it. So you cannot play around with that.”

Knowles reflected that, had the mammogram been conducted on time, her cancer might have been caught at stage 0, an even earlier stage than her diagnosis. She now considers herself “cancer-free and incredibly blessed” to have caught it in time.
Family Support and Strength
Knowles detailed how her family rallied around her during the challenging time. Beyoncé, she wrote in her memoir, “took it well, staying positive, and I could already feel her mind racing, focusing on this as a task to tackle with precision.” Meanwhile, her younger daughter Solange reassured her, saying, “We are going to take care of this.”
She also credited her niece Angie and close family friend Kelly Rowland for their unwavering support, describing them as part of her “team.” Their collective encouragement helped her stay strong and optimistic throughout her treatment.
Renewed Focus on Health
In light of her diagnosis, Knowles has made significant lifestyle changes. She revealed she has started eating healthier, noting it has helped her lose weight and feel more energetic. She now hopes her new memoir, filled with personal stories and lessons, will inspire other women to prioritize their health.
