An off-duty Toms River Police Department officer, Rebecca Sayegh, 32, has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including home invasion burglary, assault, and terroristic threats, after allegedly breaking into her ex-boyfriend’s house and attacking two individuals inside. This case has raised significant concerns about accountability and highlights issues of misconduct among law enforcement professionals.

Incident Overview: Assault and Threats Alleged

According to a press release from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, officers responded to a domestic disturbance call on Evernhan Avenue in Berkeley Township around 11:20 p.m. last Friday. Upon arrival, they reportedly found Sayegh had smashed the front glass door, entered the home, and assaulted two individuals.

Prosecutors allege Sayegh also vandalized a vehicle on the property and resisted arrest when officers attempted to take her into custody. Witnesses stated that Sayegh threatened to burn down her ex-boyfriend's house as she was being detained. She was off-duty at the time of the alleged incident.

Charges Filed: List of Offenses

Following the incident, Sayegh was charged with the following:

  • First-degree home invasion burglary
  • Terroristic threats
  • Resisting arrest
  • Two counts of assault
  • Two counts of criminal mischief

Initially, charges were filed via summons, but due to the serious nature of the allegations, she was later re-charged via warrant and arrested at her residence. She is currently being held in Ocean County Jail without bond pending further legal proceedings.

Legal Proceedings and Defense

Sayegh appeared before Brick Township Municipal Judge Joseph Grisanti on Tuesday, where prosecutors argued for her to remain detained without bond. Her attorney, Terrance Turnbach, stated, “Officer Sayegh understands the significance of the charges filed against her… She is taking all appropriate steps to address the matter and will fully cooperate throughout the legal process.”

A bond hearing is scheduled for Friday to determine whether Sayegh will remain in jail as the case moves forward.

Previous Allegations of Discrimination

Notably, Sayegh had previously filed a gender discrimination lawsuit against the Toms River Police Department in October 2024. The lawsuit claims she was denied promotions and faced sexual harassment and retaliation based on her gender. Court records allege that her superiors spread defamatory rumors about her and questioned her ability to perform her duties because she is a woman.

This lawsuit, which paints a troubling picture of a “Boys Club” culture within the department, is still pending. The current charges could potentially impact the outcome of her discrimination case.

Community and Ethical Concerns

This incident has sparked broader discussions about ethics and accountability within law enforcement. As a nine-year veteran of the Toms River Police Department, Sayegh’s case raises questions about internal disciplinary protocols and the potential misuse of authority.

Many community members have expressed concern over the alleged behavior, emphasizing the need for transparency during the investigation. Advocacy groups stress the importance of ensuring that justice is served fairly, without regard to the accused’s status as a law enforcement officer.
