Jacqueline Ma, a 36-year-old former elementary school teacher, was sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple crimes involving the sexual abuse of minors. Ma, who previously taught at Lincoln Acres Elementary School in San Diego, admitted to charges including forcible lewd acts on a child, possession of child sexual abuse material, and other related offenses.
The case against Ma began in March 2023, following allegations from the mother of a former student. According to prosecutors, Ma sent inappropriate messages to an 11-year-old boy and engaged in grooming behaviors by offering gifts, food, and special attention to gain his trust and that of his parents. San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan described Ma’s actions as “despicable,” adding, “This defendant violated the trust she had with her students in the most extreme and traumatic way possible.”

Court documents revealed that Ma, a 2022-2023 "Teacher of the Year" awardee, began abusing a sixth-grade student in 2020 and continued sending explicit images to another boy while coercing him to send videos in return. Prosecutors alleged that Ma exploited her reputation as a respected educator to avoid scrutiny. Judge Enrique Camarena noted that her status as an award-winning teacher allowed her to “remain protected from suspicion.”
In her court admission, Ma acknowledged her actions, stating, “I abused my authority, I exerted my power and control over them, and I deceived them. I ripped away their childhood.”
This case underscores the importance of safeguarding children against individuals who exploit positions of trust. The community continues to grapple with the aftermath of Ma's actions.
