- North Korea supplies Russia with weapons, ammunition, and troops, violating international sanctions, according to a U.N. report.
- Over 20,000 munitions containers and 100 ballistic missiles delivered, targeting civilian areas in Ukraine.
- Military partnership grows with a 2024 strategic treaty, exchanging weapons for technology and battlefield data.
North Korea has supplied Russia with weapons, ammunition, and troops to aid its war efforts in Ukraine, according to a new United Nations report. The findings, released this week by the U.N.’s Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team, detail extensive arms shipments and military cooperation between the two nations in violation of international sanctions.
Over 20,000 Munitions Containers and Ballistic Missiles Delivered
The report states that since late 2023, North Korea has sent over 20,000 containers of munitions to Russia, including artillery shells and rocket ammunition. Additionally, at least 100 advanced ballistic missiles were transferred in 2024, which Russian forces used to target civilian infrastructure in Ukrainian cities, such as Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia.
“Between January and December 2024 alone, the DPRK transferred at least 100 ballistic missiles to Russia,” the report stated, emphasizing the devastating impact on civilian areas.
Treaty Expands Russia-North Korea Military Ties
In June 2024, North Korea and Russia signed a Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, solidifying their alliance. Both nations pledged mutual support in case of attack, with the agreement expanding military collaboration. In exchange for providing weapons, North Korea has received battlefield data from Russia to improve its missile guidance systems. Russian-made air defense and electronic warfare technology has also been delivered to North Korea, enhancing its military capabilities.
North Korean Troops Fighting in Ukraine
Beyond weapons, North Korea has sent its own soldiers to the front lines in Ukraine. The report claims that around 12,000 North Korean troops have fought alongside Russian forces since the conflict began. Both Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have publicly praised the soldiers as “heroes.”
Implications and What’s Next
The U.N. warns that the growing military cooperation between Russia and North Korea undermines international sanctions and threatens global stability. Experts caution that this partnership could lead to further escalation in Ukraine and embolden North Korea’s ambitions.
