• Steve Bannon criticized Elon Musk for unproven fraud claims and lack of results at DOGE, while defending Trump’s spending bill.
  • Musk called Trump’s bill a “disgusting abomination,” citing unsustainable debt and urging voters to hold lawmakers accountable.
  • Bannon countered with calls for tax reforms targeting the ultra-wealthy, reigniting tensions between the two figures.

WASHINGTON — Steve Bannon, a key figure in the MAGA movement and former White House adviser, criticized billionaire Elon Musk on Wednesday over his stance on President Donald Trump’s spending bill and Musk's work with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Bannon called Musk’s claims of fraud within federal programs “unsubstantiated” and accused him of failing to achieve meaningful results at DOGE. He also opposed Musk's criticism of the Trump-backed bill, which Musk labeled “outrageous” and said would increase the U.S. deficit by $2.5 trillion.

Bannon Questions Musk's Impact at DOGE

Speaking on his WarRoom podcast, Bannon challenged Musk to provide evidence of widespread fraud in federal programs like Social Security and Medicaid.

“In Social Security and Medicaid, show me where the fraud is,” Bannon said. “Show me where the DOGE fraud is.”

A study ordered by DOGE reportedly found that only 0.0018% of calls to the Social Security Administration involved fraudulent activity, contradicting earlier claims of higher fraud rates.

Bannon noted that while DOGE initiatives, including firing thousands of federal employees and cutting funding for organizations like NPR, aimed to reduce waste, the savings were negligible within the context of the federal budget.

Musk Slams Trump’s Spending Bill

On Tuesday, Musk criticized Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” calling it a “disgusting abomination” filled with unnecessary spending. He claimed the legislation would burden Americans with “crushingly unsustainable debt.”

In a post on X, Musk urged voters to hold lawmakers accountable. “I want to see every lawmaker who voted for this bill fired in the midterms,” he wrote.

Musk also argued that the bill’s passage demonstrated a lack of fiscal responsibility, aligning with Senate budget hawks who oppose the legislation.

Bannon Calls for Tax Reforms

Bannon countered Musk’s focus on spending cuts by advocating for tax reforms targeting the ultra-wealthy. He criticized Musk, whose net worth is estimated by Forbes at $415 billion, for benefiting from existing tax cuts.

“If you want to stop the debt bomb, Elon, you’re going to have to raise taxes,” Bannon said. “The wealthy can’t get an extension of the tax cut. That’s got to go to the middle class and working class.”

Longstanding Tensions Between Bannon and Musk

Bannon’s criticism of Musk is not new. He has publicly expressed distrust of Musk since the Trump transition period, accusing the tech CEO of prioritizing personal interests over the administration’s agenda.

In January, Bannon described Musk as a “technofeudalist” and vowed to have him removed from Trump’s circle of advisors. Despite this, the Trump White House backed Musk and DOGE’s mission at the time, even as mistakes were revealed.

Musk responded to Bannon’s repeated criticism in February, writing on X, “Bannon is a great talker, but not a great doer. What did he get done this week? Nothing.”

What’s Next?

The ongoing tension between Bannon and Musk reflects broader divisions within the MAGA movement over fiscal policy and leadership priorities. Musk’s sharp criticism of Trump’s spending bill could influence conservative voters and lawmakers ahead of the midterm elections.

Bannon’s push for tax reforms targeting the wealthy may further spark debates on balancing economic growth with deficit reduction strategies.

As these high-profile figures continue their disputes, the implications for Trump’s policy agenda and the Republican Party remain uncertain.
