In a striking illustration of the deep divisions within U.S. politics, a recent survey has uncovered that a significant portion of Democrats, nearly 28%, believe the country would have been better off if GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump had died during one of two reported assassination attempts.
This survey, conducted by esteemed pollster Scott Rasmussen's Napolitan News Institute following an incident on a Florida golf course, involved 1,000 registered voters and found that 17% of all voters harbored this belief.
The poll also delved into public perceptions regarding the motivations behind these violent acts. Approximately 45% of respondents pointed to anti-Trump rhetoric as a key driver, while 41% attributed it to the way news media covers Trump. When considering the profile of the alleged assailant, 46% viewed them as "crazed individuals," whereas 33% thought they might be acting as part of an organized group.
Furthermore, echoing sentiments from as far back as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, respondents showed openness to various theories about potential conspirators behind these plots against Trump. Government agencies were suspected by 37%, while involvement by Democrats or Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign was considered possible by 34%. Additionally, foreign influence was deemed plausible by 33% of those surveyed.

Notably, there was also speculation around Trump or his campaign playing a role in these incidents, with 33% seeing this as within the realm of possibility. The poll carried out on September 16-17 comes with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
This data paints a vivid picture of an increasingly polarized America where political affiliation may influence perspectives on violence and conspiracy theories significantly.
What are your thoughts on the divisions in political beliefs revealed by this survey, particularly regarding the extreme views about Donald Trump and the factors influencing perceptions of political violence?
