In a recent announcement, the campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris confirmed her participation in an upcoming presidential debate against Donald Trump.

This news comes despite Trump's declaration that he would not engage in further debates after their last encounter on an ABC News platform. Contrary to his earlier stance, Trump had shown openness to a debate hosted by Fox News.

Jen O’Malley Dillon, chair of Harris' campaign, emphasized the importance of this event, stating, "The American people deserve to witness another debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump before making their decision at the polls.

It is nearly without precedent in recent history to have only one general election debate. These debates are crucial for voters to compare the candidates directly and evaluate their distinct plans for our country."

She further noted, "Vice President Harris welcomes the chance to once again share the stage with Donald Trump, accepting CNN's proposal for an October 23 debate. Given his previous approval of the format and execution of CNN’s June debate—which he attended and later claimed victory—it stands to reason that Donald Trump would agree to this forthcoming debate."

This development follows a June debate between Trump and then-President Joe Biden, which ended disastrously for the current president and significantly affected his campaign trajectory. The tradition of holding presidential debates has been a staple since 1976, offering candidates a platform to present their policies directly to the electorate.

The instance of Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan having only one debate in 1980 remains an exception in this longstanding practice.

What are your thoughts on the upcoming debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump? Do you believe additional debates are essential for voters to make informed decisions?
