- Federal investigation launched into Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) over allegations of aiding undocumented immigrants and hiring illegal labor, raising questions about ethical and legal boundaries in immigration policy.
NEW YORK, NY (TDR) — Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is under federal investigation over allegations of facilitating illegal immigration and employing an undocumented individual. The claims were announced Tuesday by White House border czar Tom Homan, sparking debates on immigration enforcement, political accountability, and the ethical obligations of elected officials.
Allegations of Interference and Employment of Undocumented Immigrants
The investigation comes after Homan alleged AOC improperly hired an undocumented immigrant in a personal capacity and actively assisted other undocumented individuals in evading Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Speaking on a conservative podcast, Homan said: “It’s being looked at, can’t comment past that. I’m aware of it, we’ve asked ICE to drill in on that case.”
Homan further criticized AOC’s past actions, suggesting that her efforts to educate undocumented residents on their legal rights could lead to criminal liability. “When you knowingly hinder your removal, that’s a crime,” he said.
These allegations have sparked concern, particularly in immigrant communities, as AOC represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, which includes a high number of immigrant constituents.
Former Aide’s Immigration History Adds Context
The case has also drawn attention to Diego de la Vega, a former communications aide to AOC, who made headlines earlier this year after fleeing to Colombia. De la Vega, who had lived in the U.S. since age 7 after overstaying a visitor’s visa, said in March: “It feels surreal to not be ‘illegalized’ anymore. I don’t have to live in the shadows or constantly worry about paperwork.”

AOC has publicly praised de la Vega, calling him “amazing” and noting his contributions to her office. However, the connection has fueled speculation about broader hiring practices and enforcement discrepancies, particularly as immigration remains a contentious topic in New York and across the U.S.
AOC Pushes Back on Allegations
AOC has denied any wrongdoing and accused Homan of political intimidation. In a February letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, she wrote: “I write to request clarity on whether the Department of Justice (DOJ) has yielded to political pressure and attempts to weaponize the agency against elected officials whose speech they disagree with.”
At a district town hall, AOC addressed the accusations directly, declaring: “Come for me.” Her comments have galvanized supporters, who view the investigation as a political attack, while opponents argue the allegations raise valid ethical concerns.
The Broader Immigration Debate
The investigation highlights the ongoing tug-of-war between federal immigration enforcement and advocacy for undocumented residents. New York has long been a sanctuary state, enacting policies to shield undocumented individuals from deportation. AOC’s district, which includes parts of the Bronx and Queens, represents a microcosm of this dynamic, balancing immigrant needs with legal complexities.
Homan’s critique also underscores broader tensions between progressive lawmakers and the Biden administration. While President Biden has sought to reverse many of President Trump’s hardline immigration policies, figures like Homan remain vocal advocates for strict enforcement.
The investigation into AOC raises important questions about the legal and ethical gray areas surrounding immigration policy. Should public officials face prosecution for advocating on behalf of undocumented residents? Share your thoughts below.
