- Doctors and public health organizations have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government challenging the removal of COVID-19 vaccine recommendations for children and pregnant women, accusing officials of bypassing scientific protocols and endangering public health.
BOSTON, MA (TDR) — A coalition of leading medical and public health organizations sued the U.S. government Monday, alleging the removal of COVID-19 vaccination recommendations for healthy children and pregnant women undermines public health and violates federal procedures. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Boston, accuses Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and other officials of politicizing vaccination policies and disregarding scientific standards.
Health Groups Sound Alarm Over Vaccine Policy Shift
The lawsuit, spearheaded by the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Public Health Association, and others, criticizes Kennedy’s May decision to remove COVID-19 shots for these groups from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations. Plaintiffs argue that this decision disregards decades of established scientific review processes.
“This administration is an existential threat to vaccination in America,” said Richard H. Hughes IV, lead attorney for the plaintiffs. “If left unchecked, Secretary Kennedy will accomplish his goal of ridding the United States of vaccines, unleashing preventable harm on our children.”
The legal filing also includes the American College of Physicians, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Massachusetts Public Health Association as plaintiffs, alongside a pregnant hospital doctor.
Criticism Highlights Risks to Public Health
Medical experts contend that Kennedy’s decision could confuse the public and reduce vaccine uptake, endangering children and pregnant women. The CDC previously recommended annual COVID-19 vaccinations for all Americans ages six months and older. Critics accuse Kennedy of bypassing scientific panels and prioritizing political ideology over medical evidence.
Lawsuit Seeks to Restore Accountability
The lawsuit alleges Kennedy's actions violate federal procedures meant to protect public health policy from political interference. The plaintiffs aim to reverse the decision and safeguard the vaccine recommendation process.
