• President Trump is pressuring Senate Republicans to support his $9.4 billion spending rollback, targeting PBS and NPR. The Senate vote, expected next week, could determine whether $1.1 billion in public broadcasting funds are rescinded as part of a broader push to eliminate programs tied to what Trump calls “politically biased” outlets.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TDR) — President Donald Trump warned Senate Republicans on Thursday that failure to back his rescissions package — especially provisions to defund PBS and NPR — could cost them his endorsement ahead of the 2026 midterms.

In a post to Truth Social, Trump declared, “It is very important that all Republicans adhere to my Recissions Bill and, in particular, DEFUND THE CORPORATION FOR PUBLIC BROADCASTING (PBS and NPR), which is worse than CNN & MSDNC put together.” He added, “Any Republican that votes to allow this monstrosity to continue broadcasting will not have my support or Endorsement.”

The $9.4 billion rescissions package, already passed by the House in a narrow 214–212 vote, includes $1.1 billion in cuts to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The Senate is expected to take up the bill next week, with a July 18 deadline looming.

Senate faces division

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) signaled there may be an “amendment process” to address concerns from moderates over reductions to public health, HIV prevention, and local media.

Meanwhile, public broadcasters are rallying public support. A red banner on PBS’s homepage urges viewers to “Protect PBS” and contact their senators.

Despite the political heat, public trust in PBS remains strong. A May YouGov poll ranked it as the most trusted U.S.-based news outlet, trailing only the BBC and The Weather Channel globally.

Will Trump’s demand reshape GOP loyalty—or force a public reckoning on what Americans truly value in public media?
