Federal authorities are pushing for a grand jury to bring forth charges against Ryan Routh, accusing him of plotting to murder Donald Trump. This allegation could result in a life sentence.

Assistant US Attorney Mark Dispoto revealed on Monday that Routh was found concealing himself at Trump’s West Palm Beach golf resort, in what Dispoto described as akin to a “sniper’s nest,” awaiting the opportunity to carry out his plan, as reported by the Washington Post. “His presence there had a singular purpose—to execute the former U.S. president,” Dispoto stated.

In response, Trump lambasted the Justice Department’s management of the case in an online statement, urging for the state of Florida to assume control of the proceedings. He reiterated his claim that under President Biden’s administration, both the DOJ and FBI have been misused against him, as highlighted by the Hill. Trump conveyed through his post that should the DOJ and FBI fail to impartially and effectively prosecute the alleged assassin according to law, Governor Ron DeSantis and Florida have consented to lead the investigation and legal action. “The charges proposed by Florida would carry significantly greater weight than those presently put forth by the FBI,” Trump asserted.

To date, Routh faces two firearms-related charges following his arrest after a Secret Service agent discharged their weapon at an individual near the perimeter of the golf course where Trump was playing earlier this month.

The absence of any shots fired by Routh has made it challenging for prosecutors to pursue more severe charges. Nonetheless, during Monday’s court proceedings—which lasted almost three hours—prosecutors argued Routh’s intention was unmistakably to assassinate Trump, referencing evidence such as a note affirming this intent.

Routh’s defense attorneys contended that he poses neither a flight risk nor a threat to society during this West Palm Beach hearing, according to reports from The New York Times. However, U.S Magistrate Judge Ryon M. McCabe decided that Routh should be detained without bail pending further legal actions.
