Senator Lindsey Graham expressed optimism on Thursday about Nebraska’s potential shift in its electoral college vote allocation ahead of the forthcoming election, emphasizing the significant impact a single electoral vote could have on the presidential race.
During his discussions with Governor Jim Pillen and state lawmakers in Nebraska, Graham advocated for a transition to a winner-take-all system. “Given that President Trump is poised to win the state by a substantial margin, it’s only logical,” he remarked.
Nebraska and Maine stand out as the only states that diverge from the winner-take-all approach, opting instead to distribute their electoral votes according to congressional districts. This unique method could lead to Vice President Kamala Harris securing an electoral vote from Omaha, a scenario Graham deems crucial to avoid. “The stakes are incredibly high—it’s not just about Nebraska but about the future direction of our country and even globally,” he stated.

Graham’s visit was at the behest of Senator Pete Ricketts and Governor Pillen, who are both vocal supporters of moving towards a winner-take-all system. Ricketts highlighted the importance of ensuring every voter’s voice is heard and pointed out how the current system could silence rural constituents. He also commended Graham for his effective advocacy for this electoral change.
The push for reform comes amid concerns that former President Donald Trump would greatly benefit from such a shift in how Nebraska allocates its Electoral College votes. Governor Pillen has expressed readiness to call a special legislative session to address this issue before the 2024 election cycle, contingent on sufficient support from state senators.
As early voting looms on October 1st, Secretary of State Bob Evnen indicated that adjustments to adopt a winner-take-all framework could still be made before Election Day on November 5th. However, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized these efforts as manipulative attempts by Republicans who fear they cannot secure an election victory through conventional means.
How do you feel about the proposal to shift Nebraska’s electoral vote allocation to a winner-take-all system, and what impact do you think it could have on future elections?
