Florida is once again on high alert, facing the threat of a new hurricane just days after Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc across the state. The National Hurricane Center has identified Tropical Storm Milton, which formed in the western Gulf of Mexico.

This storm is notably early for its name in the alphabetical sequence, with such events typically not occurring until late October. Forecasters predict that Milton could intensify into a Category 3 hurricane as it approaches Florida’s west coast next week.

Milton’s rapid progression from a tropical depression to a named storm signals an unusually active hurricane season. Conditions such as minimal vertical wind shear and exceptionally warm ocean temperatures are contributing to the storm’s potential for steady to rapid strengthening. Predictions suggest that Milton will reach hurricane status within 36 hours and could escalate to a major hurricane shortly thereafter.

As it moves across the Gulf of Mexico, Milton is expected to approach Florida with winds reaching up to 115 mph, categorizing it as a major hurricane—a designation for storms of Category 3 or higher according to the Saffir-Simpson Scale. In anticipation of severe impacts, including dangerous storm surge and winds, Florida may see hurricane and storm surge watches issued by Sunday.

Governor Ron DeSantis has already declared a state of emergency for 35 counties in response to the looming threat. This proactive measure comes as communities still reel from Helene’s impact, which left over 200 dead and widespread destruction in its wake just earlier this month.

The forecast for Milton includes heavy rainfall across Florida, with total accumulations expected to range from 4 to 6 inches and isolated areas possibly receiving up to 10 inches through Thursday. This comes at a time when parts of Florida have already experienced significant rainfall surpluses this year, exacerbating concerns about flooding and storm surge potential.
