The Brief;

  • Congress members are gaining access to a controversial House Ethics Committee report on attorney general nominee Matt Gaetz, involving serious allegations including sexual abuse and illicit drug use, ahead of his Senate confirmation hearings.
  • The report, initially restricted to a few committee members, is now available to all panel members due to Gaetz’s nomination by President-elect Donald Trump and his resignation from Congress.
  • Despite opposition from House Speaker Mike Johnson regarding public disclosure, some Republicans push for transparency amid ongoing allegations against Gaetz, who denies all accusations.

In a significant development that has captured the attention of Capitol Hill, more members of Congress are now being allowed to scrutinize a controversial House Ethics Committee report concerning attorney general nominee Matt Gaetz. The report, which delves into serious allegations against Gaetz including sexual abuse and illicit drug use, is emerging as a focal point in the lead-up to his Senate confirmation hearings.

This move to broaden access to the contentious document comes amid growing calls for its public disclosure. Initially, the report’s contents were limited to a select few, including Ethics Committee Chair Michael Guest and Representative Susan Wild. However, in light of Gaetz’s nomination by President-elect Donald Trump and his subsequent resignation from Congress—a move that temporarily shielded the report from public view—the committee has decided to grant all panel members access.

Chairman Guest confirmed this shift in policy, stating that any member of the bipartisan committee wishing to review the draft report may now do so. He also noted that a private meeting among members is scheduled to discuss its contents further.

Despite these developments, House Speaker Mike Johnson has expressed strong opposition to releasing the report publicly, citing concerns over its potential impact. Yet some Republicans argue for transparency, especially given Gaetz’s pending nomination as attorney general.

Amidst these political maneuvers, allegations against Gaetz continue to surface. Florida attorney Joel Leppard recently told Politico that he represents two women claiming they were paid by Gaetz for sex at parties he attended from 2017 to 2018. One alleges witnessing Gaetz with a minor.

Denying all accusations, Gaetz finds support within Trump’s transition team. Spokesman Alex Pfeiffer assured Newsweek of Gaetz’s qualifications for the attorney general role, accusing detractors of attempting to undermine Trump’s administration with “baseless allegations.”

Should Gaetz secure the position, it would place him at the helm of the Department of Justice—a body that previously investigated him over child sex trafficking claims—marking a controversial chapter in his career and setting a dramatic tone for Trump’s second term.
