Much of Maryland is preparing for significant snowfall, expected to begin late Sunday night and continue through Monday. As of Sunday, several school systems, including Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Harford County, and Cecil County Public Schools, announced closures for Monday due to the approaching winter storm. The National Weather Service issued a statewide winter storm warning, while Governor Wes Moore declared a state of preparedness, enhancing Maryland’s ability to respond to potential hazards.

Snowfall Predictions Increase Across the State

Central Maryland is forecast to bear the brunt of the storm, with meteorologists predicting 9 to 11 inches of snow for Anne Arundel and nearby counties. Baltimore’s earlier estimate of 4 to 6 inches has risen to 6 to 9 inches, while northern counties, such as Harford, Cecil, and northern Baltimore County, may see 5 to 7 inches. Fox45’s Chief Meteorologist Gerard Jebaily noted that heavier snowfall will likely pass through Central Maryland, contributing to higher accumulations statewide.

Travel and Safety Alerts in Effect

State officials are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel. A news release from Gov. Moore’s office emphasized the potential for icy roads and dangerous conditions, warning drivers to proceed with extreme caution. According to the Baltimore Department of Transportation’s interim director Veobia Akilo, road crews began brining major thoroughfares last Thursday and are continuing to treat roads ahead of the storm. Residents should be prepared for freezing temperatures and challenging travel conditions throughout Monday.

Snowfall in the Baltimore area is set to begin after 2 a.m. Monday and will likely persist throughout the day. By late afternoon, snow may mix with freezing rain, particularly before 4 p.m. Meteorologists predict the storm will taper off by Monday evening, with snowfall gradually ending after 7 p.m. Temperatures will remain frigid, with Monday’s high forecast at just 29 degrees and freezing rain expected to transition back to snow.

Emergency Measures in Place

In response to the extreme cold, Baltimore’s Health Department issued a Code Blue Extreme Cold Alert from Saturday through Tuesday. This alert highlights the increased risk of frostbite and hypothermia for those exposed to the cold. The city’s winter shelters remain open, and residents seeking assistance can call the Shelter Hotline at 443-984-9540. Meanwhile, transportation officials are continuing to monitor road conditions and ensure safety measures are in place.

Stay Prepared and Stay Safe

As Maryland braces for significant snowfall and freezing conditions, residents should prioritize safety. Avoid unnecessary travel, bundle up to protect against the cold, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
