A Panamanian-flagged oil tanker, heavily loaded with 99,000 tons of crude oil, has been adrift in rough seas off Germany’s northern coast since Friday. The vessel, identified as the Eventin, lost power and steering, prompting Germany’s Central Command for Maritime Emergencies (CCME) to dispatch three tugboats and a team of emergency towing specialists to secure the ship.

Emergency Response Underway

The Eventin, en route from Russia’s Ust-Luga port to Egypt’s Port Said, became stranded in the coastal waters near the island of Rügen. CCME confirmed that the ship, measuring 274 meters in length, had been “drifting at low speed” overnight. Strong winds and waves reaching up to 2.5 meters have complicated the rescue efforts, with weather conditions expected to remain severe for the next 24 hours.

Emergency tugboats, including the Bremen Fighter, intercepted the vessel early Friday. Specialists were airlifted onto the tanker to ensure its load was evenly distributed among the tugboats. However, authorities later announced the tanker would not be moved immediately, as discussions with the shipping company and relevant authorities continued to determine the next steps.

Concerns Over Russia’s “Shadow Fleet”

Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock criticized Russia’s use of what she described as “dilapidated tankers” in its so-called “shadow fleet.” These vessels are allegedly used by Moscow to bypass Western sanctions imposed after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Baerbock warned of potential risks to European security, stating that Russia’s operation of outdated ships poses a serious threat in the event of an accident.

“Putin’s use of rusty tankers not only undermines sanctions but also endangers tourism and the environment in the Baltic Sea,” Baerbock said. Her comments reflect growing concerns over the safety and environmental impact of these aging vessels deployed to transport oil under restrictive circumstances.

Sanctions on “Shadow Fleet” Ships

Western nations have ramped up sanctions targeting Russia’s oil exports and its associated fleet. The United States and the United Kingdom announced fresh sanctions on Friday, targeting 180 vessels identified as part of Russia’s “shadow fleet.” Meanwhile, the European Union has sanctioned over 70 such ships in its effort to curb Russia’s ability to evade restrictions.

The Eventin incident highlights the risks associated with these sanctions-evading operations. Critics argue that the use of poorly maintained vessels increases the likelihood of maritime accidents, putting coastal communities and ecosystems at risk.

Next Steps Remain Uncertain

As rough seas persist, German authorities have yet to decide on the Eventin‘s next destination. For now, the tanker remains stationary as officials work with the shipping company to assess options. The CCME stated that the priority is ensuring the safety of the crew, the environment, and the oil cargo.

The situation underscores the broader challenges faced by international regulators in managing the environmental and security risks posed by Russia’s shadow fleet. With tensions over sanctions continuing to escalate, incidents like this serve as a stark reminder of the potential consequences.
