Federal agencies and unions are rejecting Elon Musk’s controversial push for federal workers to submit weekly accomplishment reports. Last Saturday, Musk tweeted that federal employees must report at least five achievements by Monday midnight or face termination. This demand was followed by an email from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). However, several agencies have urged their employees to hold off, challenging the legality and purpose of the directive.
Agencies Question Musk’s Authority
The Department of Defense (DoD) swiftly responded. Under Secretary of Defense Darin Selnick told employees to pause their responses, stating, “When and if required, the Department will coordinate responses to the email you have received from OPM.” Similarly, FBI Director Kash Patel announced the bureau would conduct internal employee reviews following its own procedures.

The State Department also chimed in, clarifying that employees are not obligated to report outside their chain of command. Their statement emphasized, “The State Department will respond on behalf of the Department. No employee is obligated to report their activities outside of their Department chain of command.”
In the intelligence sector, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard strongly opposed Musk’s demand, stating, “Given the inherently sensitive and classified nature of our work, I.C. employees should not respond to the OPM email.”
Union Leaders Stand Firm Against Musk
Unions have been quick to defend federal employees. Everett Kelley, president of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), strongly criticized Musk’s directive. Kelley called it an “irresponsible and sophomoric attempt” to cause chaos and intimidate federal workers. He directed the union’s 800,000 members to ignore the email and demanded OPM rescind the request and issue an apology.
Kelley stated, “Federal employees report to their respective agencies through their established chains of command; they do not report to OPM.” His strong opposition reflects growing backlash across federal agencies.
