- Donald Trump replaces Kennedy Center leadership with loyal allies, sparking major backlash.
- Stars like Issa Rae, Reneé Fleming, and Shonda Rhimes cut ties in protest of the changes.
- Questions arise about the Kennedy Center’s future under Trump-aligned leadership.
Donald Trump has taken center stage once again, this time at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. After purging the board of appointees chosen by Joe Biden, Trump filled the vacancies with his loyal allies, clearing the way to install himself as chair. The board also removed the center’s president, Deborah Rutter, and appointed Richard Grenell, former U.S. ambassador to Germany during the first Trump administration, as interim president.
This shake-up has already caused a ripple effect, with major stars and cultural figures distancing themselves from the institution in protest.

The backlash was swift. Issa Rae, creator and star of Insecure, announced on Instagram that she was canceling her sold-out, one-night-only show at the Kennedy Center. Rae wrote, “Unfortunately, due to what I believe to be an infringement on the values of an institution that has faithfully celebrated artists of all backgrounds through all mediums, I’ve decided to cancel my appearance at this venue.”
Meanwhile, renowned soprano Reneé Fleming stepped down as artistic adviser, pointing to her respect for the ousted leadership. Without directly naming Trump, she stated, “I’ve treasured the bipartisan support for this institution as a beacon of America at our best.”
Other celebrities followed suit. Shonda Rhimes, creator of Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy, resigned from her treasurer position. Similarly, singer-songwriter Ben Folds announced on Instagram that he was stepping down as artistic adviser to the National Symphony Orchestra, saying simply, “Not for me.”

When asked about his motives, Donald Trump didn’t mince words. He declared that the Kennedy Center didn’t need “woke” programming, dismissing some previous shows as “terrible” and a “disgrace.” However, when asked if he had seen any of the performances he criticized, Trump admitted he hadn’t.
The Broader Implications for the Arts
This dramatic shift raises questions about the future of the Kennedy Center as a cultural hub. With a Trump-aligned board and leadership, will the center reflect his vision for the arts, or could it alienate its historically diverse audience?
