The Small Business Administration (SBA) is undergoing a massive overhaul as part of efforts spearheaded by the Trump administration to reduce government spending and eliminate waste. The agency plans to trim its workforce by an astounding 43%, cutting approximately 2,700 jobs from its roster of 6,500 employees, according to SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler.

Restructuring to Serve Small Businesses Better

Loeffler announced the restructuring initiative on Friday, stating, “The SBA was established to be a catalyst for American small businesses, providing access to capital that powers job creation, innovation, and thriving local economies.” However, she emphasized that the agency had strayed from its original purpose in recent years.

Under the last administration, the SBA’s workforce ballooned in size, doubling since the Covid-19 pandemic began. This expansion, Loeffler argued, led to a bureaucratic leviathan riddled with inefficiency, financial mismanagement, and fraud.

She pointed out that the SBA’s largest loan program, intended to operate at no cost to taxpayers, experienced negative cash flow for the first time in over a decade. Even more troubling, the agency failed to investigate or prosecute over $200 billion in pandemic-related fraud, leaving taxpayers on the hook.

Accountability and Realignment

Loeffler explained that the restructuring aims to restore the SBA’s founding principles and align its resources with its core mission. She remarked, “Much like the small business owners we support, we must learn to do more with less.”

In a video posted to X (formerly Twitter), Loeffler highlighted ongoing inefficiencies, including empty office desks due to remote work policies and the agency’s inability to pass an audit for the past four years.

She also criticized the previous administration for using the SBA to advance partisan programs, such as Green New Deal lending initiatives and diversity, equity, and inclusion contracting. According to Loeffler, these efforts distracted from the agency’s mission, causing its services to decline significantly.

This announcement coincided with President Donald Trump’s executive order, signed on Thursday, which stripped the Department of Education (DOE) down to its essential functions. The SBA will now take over the management of student loans, marking another significant shift in government operations.

Trump’s bold move, aimed at reducing redundancy and boosting efficiency, underscores his commitment to streamlining government agencies. Loeffler voiced her support for the decision, pledging that the SBA will execute its new responsibilities with the highest level of accountability.

Loeffler concluded her remarks with a call to action: “As administrator, I’m committed to restoring the SBA’s mission of championing America’s small businesses with accountability and results. When we revive our purpose, we will also revive the historic prosperity that lifted millions of small businesses during President Trump’s first term. In short, we will Make Main Street Great Again.”
