• Sen. Lindsey Graham warns against halting U.S. military and intelligence support to Ukraine, citing global risks and comparisons to Afghanistan.
  • Strained relations between Trump and Zelensky previously led to paused U.S.-Ukraine deals and concerns over aid.
  • Graham proposes tough sanctions on Russia’s banking and energy sectors to push for peace talks.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) issued a strong warning on Sunday regarding the potential fallout from halting U.S. military support and intelligence sharing with Ukraine as the country continues its fight against Russia. Speaking on Fox News Channel’s “Fox News Sunday,” Graham emphasized the importance of maintaining aid to Ukraine to prevent dangerous repercussions globally.

Aid Suspension Risks a Repeat of Afghanistan

“Yeah, I am worried about cutting off intelligence and weapons to Ukraine as long as the fighting continues,” Graham said. He went on to stress that pulling support now could lead to a situation even worse than Afghanistan. Graham expressed his belief that President Trump understands the risks and has no desire to withdraw aid prematurely.

Until a ceasefire is achieved, Graham advocated for providing Ukraine with the necessary tools, including intelligence and weapons, to defend itself effectively.

A History of Tensions Between Leaders

Graham also touched on the strained relationship between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and President Trump. He referenced the controversial Oval Office meeting where Zelensky highlighted Russian President Vladimir Putin’s consistent disregard for ceasefire agreements. However, the meeting turned sour as Trump and Vice President Vance criticized Zelensky, accusing him of being unappreciative of U.S. support.

This tense exchange led to a temporary halt in negotiations for a U.S.-Ukraine deal involving rare earth minerals, with Ukraine seeking security guarantees in return. Notably, Trump decided to pause U.S. military and intelligence assistance to Ukraine, sparking concerns among Republican lawmakers.

Graham’s Plan: Sanction Russia Hard

To push Russia to the negotiating table, Graham announced he will propose legislation imposing tough sanctions on Russia’s banking and energy sectors. “We should sanction the hell out of them,” he said, urging Russia to engage in peace talks.
