- CBP reports $500 million collected since April 5, with total tariff revenue reaching $21 billion since January 2025, contradicting Trump’s $2 billion daily claim.
- A 10-hour financial system glitch caused temporary disruptions, but CBP maintained an average of $250 million in daily tariff revenue.
- Treasury data shows daily tariff deposits at $305 million, far below Trump’s estimates, raising concerns about the accuracy of his statements.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is pushing back on President Donald Trump’s claims regarding daily tariff revenues. Trump has repeatedly stated the U.S. earns $2 billion per day from tariffs. However, CBP reported to CNBC that since April 5, they’ve collected over $500 million under the new reciprocal tariffs, contributing to $21 billion in total tariff revenue from 15 trade actions since January 20, 2025.
Tariff Glitch Causes Confusion
Last week, a 10-hour glitch in the financial system temporarily prevented importers from inputting exemption codes for freight already in transit. Despite the hiccup, CBP maintained an average $250 million in daily revenue, according to their statement.
Data Contradicts Trump’s Estimates
Treasury Department data released Monday lists daily deposits from tariffs under “Customs and Certain Excise Taxes” as $305 million, far below Trump’s $2 billion estimate. All tariffs are collected at points of entry, and discrepancies between CBP’s figures and Trump’s claims raise questions about the accuracy of the president’s statements.
