- Kevin O’Leary supports Trump’s tariffs on China, calling them essential to combat intellectual property theft and unfair trade practices.
- He proposes even harsher measures, including 400% tariffs, to hold China accountable for decades of alleged rule violations.
- O’Leary urges negotiations for a fair trade deal, emphasizing the importance of accountability while maintaining trade relations.
“Shark Tank” star Kevin O’Leary isn’t pulling punches when it comes to President Trump’s tariffs on China. In a fiery interview with CNN, O’Leary likened China to a disobedient puppy, insisting that the U.S. must reinforce strict discipline to combat intellectual property (IP) theft.
“It’s not just about trade tariffs—it’s about cheating and stealing,” O’Leary stated. “China thinks stealing IP is okay. It’s time to teach them the rules, like training a puppy—you stick their nose in the mess and show them accountability.”
Why Tariffs Are Necessary
Trump’s tariffs have imposed a 10 percent import tax globally, with higher penalties targeting China specifically. While these moves rattled global markets, O’Leary argued they’re a vital step to force Beijing to stop its exploitation. “No one’s challenged China this way in decades—not Europe, not previous administrations. It’s long overdue,” he said.

China responded with a sharp 125 percent tariff on U.S. goods, escalating tensions. But O’Leary is adamant: staying firm is critical. “This isn’t just about trade—it’s about setting boundaries for fair play,” he said.
O’Leary’s Extreme Tariff Suggestion
Always bold, O’Leary proposed an even tougher stance—400 percent tariffs on Chinese exports. Pointing to decades of what he calls blatant violations of World Trade Organization rules, he declared, “They steal without remorse. Enough is enough.”
Drawing from his own business dealings in China, he accused the nation of systematic cheating. “They’ve been gaming the system since 2001. Leaders need to stand up now,” O’Leary argued.
The Endgame? A Fair Deal
Despite his harsh criticism, O’Leary doesn’t want a never-ending trade war. He urged Chinese President Xi Jinping to negotiate a fairer trade agreement. “I want to trade with China, but they have to stop stealing. Let’s sit down and fix this,” he said.
