Summary: President Trump denied reports of tariff exemptions for electronics, stating no leniency is being granted, especially to China. He clarified these items fall under the 20% Fentanyl Tariffs. His administration is reviewing semiconductors and electronics under national security investigations. Critics cite mixed messaging on trade policy.

President Donald Trump issued a sharp response Sunday on Truth Social, intensifying debates around his administration’s tariff policies. His fiery remarks come on the heels of Friday’s announcement that certain electronics, including smartphones and computers, would reportedly be exempt from tariffs. Yet, Trump insists there’s no leniency being granted, especially to China.

“NOBODY is getting ‘off the hook’ for unfair trade practices, especially not China, which treats us the worst!” Trump declared, clarifying that no tariff exceptions were announced. He said these products now fall under a different tariff category, still subject to the 20% Fentanyl Tariffs. He accused “Fake News” outlets of misrepresenting his policy.

Trump revealed that his administration is “taking a look at semiconductors and the whole electronics supply chain” as part of upcoming national security tariff investigations. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick echoed this stance during an interview on ABC’s This Week, describing the exemptions as temporary.

“This isn’t permanent,” Lutnick explained. “These products are exempt from reciprocal tariffs but will soon fall under the semiconductor tariff category, likely within a couple of months.”

Financial Sector Reacts

These comments triggered backlash from financial experts, who criticized the administration’s mixed messaging. Critics argue that inconsistent statements add uncertainty for businesses navigating trade rules. The business world is now left wondering how these potential tariffs will impact supply chains and global trade relations.
