Matthew Patrick Gay, a 34-year-old man from Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to 23 months and 258 days in prison, with a maximum sentence of 95 months, for a string of diamond thefts at a Walmart Supercenter in Athens Township, near the New York State border. Gay, described by authorities as a “longtime thief,” was convicted of stealing seven diamond rings valued at $7,362.50. This case highlights the broader issue of repeat offenses and the challenges of preventing similar crimes.

A Pattern of Theft Across Counties

Gay’s criminal acts occurred throughout 2022, with each theft methodically planned. Surveillance footage revealed him distracting employees at the jewelry counter, switching the rings with items from his pocket. The stolen diamonds and subsequent charges reflect Gay’s consistent retail theft practices, which authorities say have been part of his criminal history for years.

Adding to his legal troubles, Gay fled sentencing in August 2024, prompting a warrant for his arrest. While evading authorities, he committed similar crimes in Berks County, 130 miles south of Athens Township, resulting in an earlier sentence of 5 to 24 months in prison, plus two years of probation.

Authorities Aim to End a Cycle of Crime

Bradford County District Attorney Richard Wilson emphasized the necessity of a lengthy sentence, citing Gay’s history of over two dozen offenses. “A lengthy state prison sentence is appropriate. It appears to be the only way we can protect society from Matthew Gay’s thievery,” Wilson said. Prosecutors hope this case will serve as a clear message about the consequences of repeated crimes and failing to comply with the judicial process.
