After agents activated a siren, Perez-Rodriguez allegedly ran toward them. An agent opened a car door, instructing her to drop the machete. When she allegedly failed to comply, the agent discharged his firearm, neutralizing the perceived threat. Perez-Rodriguez was injured and transported to the hospital for treatment.

Witness Accounts

Witnesses described a chaotic scene leading up to the incident. According to one witness, Perez-Rodriguez was reportedly attacked by a group of individuals before retrieving a machete and searching for her attackers. “She went inside a store with a bag holding the machete,” a witness told Fox 26, adding that she later walked onto the roadway with the weapon.

Potential Consequences

Perez-Rodriguez is charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer. If convicted, she could face up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Legal and Ethical Considerations

The incident raises questions about law enforcement use of force, mental health support, and the circumstances surrounding Perez-Rodriguez’s actions. By addressing these dynamics, we can better understand the risks faced by both civilians and officers during volatile encounters.
