MELBOURNE, FL — A Florida caregiver faces up to 30 years in prison after being convicted of aggravated manslaughter in the horrifying and “agonizing” 2019 death of his 87-year-old grandmother, Anita Arias, who suffered from starvation, dehydration, and infected, insect-ridden bedsores.

Allen G. Arias, 47, was found guilty on Tuesday by a Brevard County jury after a 17-hour deliberation process. Prosecutors argued that Arias failed to provide even basic care for his grandmother, whom he served as the legal caregiver. Anita Arias was rushed to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Florida, in 2019, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Medical staff immediately flagged her condition to law enforcement, describing it as one of the worst cases of neglect they had ever seen.

“She was covered in bedsores, some infested with maggots and other insects,” stated police in a probable cause affidavit. “Ulcers along her legs, back, and feet showed active insect activity and were in advanced stages of infection.”

Shocking Discovery at the Victim’s Home

Following Anita Arias’ death, officers with the Melbourne Police Department executed a search warrant at the home she owned and shared with Allen Arias. Inside, they discovered “filthy conditions,” particularly in the elderly woman’s bedroom. Investigators also found diabetes medications prescribed to Anita Arias that appeared unused, raising further questions about her care.

Prosecutors revealed during the trial that Anita Arias died as a result of “dehydration, emaciation, sepsis, and highly elevated blood sugar.” The autopsy findings were presented by Assistant State Attorneys Tiffany Colon and Mike Doyle, who highlighted the defendant’s role as the sole caregiver.

“Allen Arias knew about her diabetes and mobility issues but failed to ensure her basic health needs were met,” said Colon in a statement after the verdict. Photos of Anita Arias’ extensive, infected bedsores were shown to jurors during the trial.

During the trial, Allen Arias’ defense attorney argued that Anita Arias contributed to her own condition, portraying her as a “lifelong curmudgeon and hoarder” who frequently refused to eat, take her medications, or attend doctor appointments. Several family members testified to her personality and behavior, suggesting she was difficult to care for.

However, jurors rejected the argument. Prosecutors maintained that a caregiver’s duty is to ensure the well-being of those they are responsible for, regardless of challenges.

“It’s unfair to say she died the way she lived,” said Colon. “Elderly people might be set in their ways, but if you’re their caregiver, you need to provide proper care—or ask for help.”

Justice for Anita Arias

Following the jury’s decision, Allen Arias was taken into custody and transported to Brevard County Jail. He faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in Florida state prison and a $10,000 fine. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for August 20, 2025.

Colon expressed relief at the verdict, stating, “I’m glad Anita Arias finally received justice, even though she wasn’t here to see it.”
