CHICAGO, IL — Michelle Obama opened up about parenting and societal views on masculinity in a recent episode of her “IMO” podcast, voicing her gratitude for raising two daughters instead of a son. The former first lady spoke candidly about her family dynamic, societal expectations, and the joy she’s found in watching her daughters, Malia, 26, and Sasha, 24, grow into adulthood.

Speaking with radio host Angie Martinez and her brother, Craig Robinson, in Wednesday’s episode, Obama shared her thoughts on raising boys in today’s climate. “I’m so glad I didn’t have a boy,” she said, explaining that a son could have been a “kiddie clone” of her husband, President Barack Obama. “I would’ve felt for him,” she added, noting the pressure that might have come with being a younger version of the 44th president.

Parenting in the Public Eye

During the discussion, Obama reflected on her parenting journey, from raising infants to navigating the teenage years in the White House. “I’ve loved every phase of parenting… and watching them become their own people,” she said. Despite their unique upbringing under the public eye, Malia and Sasha have “figured stuff out” on their own while staying connected to their parents.

Robinson, who has sons of his own, joked about Obama “borrowing” his boys. “I got plenty,” Obama chuckled in response.

Parenting and Gender Conversations

The conversation also touched on broader societal discussions about masculinity and the challenges boys face today. While the Obamas raised daughters, the dialogue highlighted the pressures and complexities that often come with raising young men.

Michelle Obama remains one of the most influential cultural figures, shaping parenting conversations in America with her thoughtful insights.
