• A politically motivated shooting in Minnesota left two state lawmakers, Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, dead, while injuring Sen. John Hoffman and his wife. The suspect, Vance Boelter, was arrested after a 36-hour manhunt, prompting calls for increased security for public officials amid rising political violence.

(The Dupree Report) – Vance Boelter, 57, was arrested Sunday in Green Isle, Minnesota, following a 36-hour manhunt after authorities say he targeted two state lawmakers and their spouses in politically motivated shootings that left two dead and two others injured.

The shootings, described by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as a “political assassination,” have shocked the state, prompting discussions about public safety and political violence. The victims include Rep. Melissa Hortman, a Democrat and former Speaker of the Minnesota House, and her husband, Mark, who were shot and killed in their Brooklyn Park home early Saturday. State Sen. John Hoffman, also a Democrat, and his wife, Yvette, were injured in a similar attack at their Champlin residence. Hoffman is recovering from surgery, while Yvette is also healing, officials said.

Boelter, who allegedly impersonated a police officer during the attacks, was charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree attempted murder, according to Hennepin County court records. Authorities believe the attacks were politically driven, emphasizing the growing risks faced by public officials nationwide.

Authorities revealed that Boelter fled the scene of the shootings and managed to evade capture for more than a day, prompting shelter-in-place orders in the northwest metro area. Brooklyn Park police discovered a vehicle resembling a police SUV outside the Hortman residence with emergency lights activated. Boelter allegedly exchanged gunfire with officers before fleeing the scene.

Minnesota State Patrol Lt. Col. Jeremy Geiger said Boelter ultimately surrendered without further incident, crawling toward law enforcement officers to give himself up.

Political Violence Sparks Concern

Gov. Walz described these attacks as unprecedented, saying they were “a targeted act of political violence” against public servants. “We will do everything in our power to ensure justice is served,” he said during a Sunday press conference, adding that resources from across the state will be dedicated to the case.

Hortman, a prominent figure in Minnesota politics, was known for her leadership in the House and her commitment to bipartisan cooperation. In a statement, Walz honored her legacy, saying, “Melissa Hortman was a dedicated public servant who believed in the power of government to improve lives.”

The tragic events have prompted calls for increased security measures for public officials. Speaker Lisa Demuth, R-Cold Spring, expressed gratitude for law enforcement’s efforts and called for justice. “This nightmare has come to an end with the suspected murderer captured alive so he can be prosecuted for the horror he brought to our state,” Demuth said in a written statement.

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar echoed this sentiment, praising the “mammoth and heroic effort” by law enforcement to locate and arrest Boelter.

A Growing National Concern

The shootings highlight a troubling trend of increasing political violence across the United States. While attacks on public officials have historically been rare, recent years have seen a rise in threats and violence, fueled by deepening political divisions.
