HOUSTON, TX — A rent dispute turned deadly after a man allegedly murdered his teenage roommate and attempted to harm others in a shocking case that has rocked the Harris County community.

Angel Gomez Montanez, 21, is accused of fatally shooting Christopher Rodriguez Lara, 18, after being asked to contribute to household expenses. The suspect, who had been living rent-free for months, was arrested after a two-day manhunt and now faces charges of murder.

A Family Connection Turns Tragic

Investigators revealed that Gomez Montanez wasn’t just a random roommate but had familial ties to the victim. He had been staying on the apartment’s couch for three months, according to Zuleyka Ortiz, the victim’s sister-in-law. “The only thing we told him is we needed the money for rent,” Ortiz told KTRK. “We have bills to pay.”

Days before the altercation, Gomez Montanez reportedly packed his belongings and left after being confronted about rent. However, he returned on June 12, asking to speak with Rodriguez Lara. Moments later, he allegedly shot the teen outside the front door.

The Crime Scene and Aftermath

Harris County deputies responded to reports of a shooting around 10 p.m. at the 17000 block of Butte Creek Road. Rodriguez Lara was found suffering from gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead on the scene by emergency personnel. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed that the shooting arose from an argument about rent.

After a brief period on the run, Gomez Montanez was captured and booked into the Harris County Jail, where he faces murder charges.

A Victim Remembered

Ortiz described Rodriguez Lara as “the happiness in this home.” She added, “My children loved him.” The tragedy has left the family devastated as they grapple with the senseless loss of a loved one.

The Legal and Social Implications

The case highlights the often-overlooked tensions that can arise in shared living situations, particularly those involving family members. As the legal proceedings unfold, Harris County residents are left to reflect on the devastating impact of violence within families.
