- WBA lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis was arrested early Friday in Miami on domestic violence charges. The arrest comes just weeks ahead of his highly anticipated Aug. 16 rematch with Lamont Roach Jr. in Las Vegas. Davis is undefeated but faces mounting legal distractions as he prepares to defend his 135-pound title.
MIAMI, FL (TDR) — Just six weeks before stepping into the ring for his next title defense, WBA lightweight champ Gervonta “Tank” Davis is facing more legal trouble—this time in South Florida.
According to Andy Slater of FOX Sports 640, Davis was arrested Friday morning and accused of striking his ex-girlfriend in the back of the head and slapping her. He was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center at 3:35 a.m. ET, per Al Butler of UPI, on battery-domestic violence charges.
Davis, 30, has a history of legal issues. In 2023, he spent 44 days in detention after violating the terms of his 90-day house arrest sentence related to a 2020 hit-and-run incident in Baltimore that left four people injured.

The arrest casts a cloud over Davis’s scheduled Aug. 16 title rematch against Lamont Roach Jr. in Las Vegas. Their first meeting on March 1 in Brooklyn ended in a controversial majority draw, with one key moment being Davis’s ninth-round knee after a Roach jab. Referee Steve Wilkes didn’t rule it a knockdown, and two judges scored the round 10-9 for Davis.
“If that’s a knockdown, I win the fight,” Roach said post-fight. “I just thought I pulled it out.”
Now, the rematch’s promotion risks being overshadowed by Davis’s legal situation. Despite the distractions, Davis (30-0-1, 27 KOs) remains unbeaten and intends to move forward. “Hopefully, we can run it back,” he said in June. “Lamont is a great fighter… it was a lesson.”
Fans React to Legal Drama
Boxing fans and analysts took to social media quickly after the arrest news broke. Some voiced concern about the timing, while others criticized Davis’s repeated off-ring troubles. The WBA has yet to issue a public statement, and Davis’s team has not commented.
