• Nearly 140 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) employees are under investigation for allegedly using their official roles to mislead the public. The employees reportedly issued a letter contradicting agency policy, escalating tensions amid significant staff cuts and policy changes under the current administration.

WASHINGTON, DC (TDR) — The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has placed 139 employees on administrative leave following allegations that they misused their official positions to sign and distribute a letter criticizing agency policies. According to officials, the letter included misleading information about agency business and was sent under the banner of Stand Up for Science, a nonprofit advocacy group.

Allegations of Misconduct

The controversial letter, addressed to EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, was reportedly sent by agency employees early this week. It was later published by Stand Up for Science. The letter allegedly used employees’ official titles and EPA affiliations, prompting an internal investigation into potential breaches of protocol. An EPA spokesperson stated the agency has “zero tolerance” for employees undermining the administration’s agenda or misleading the public.

Stand Up for Science confirmed the situation via email. Colette Delawalla, the group’s executive director, said the nonprofit is still gathering information but condemned the agency’s actions. “These are dedicated civil servants whose career goal is to keep Americans safe,” Delawalla said.

The investigation follows a series of significant staffing and policy changes at the EPA. In April, President Trump’s administration eliminated its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Environmental Justice programs, while cutting over 30 Biden-era regulations. Nearly 500 EPA employees were either fired or reassigned, including staff from the Office of Environmental Justice and External Civil Rights.

Administrator Zeldin confirmed that 280 employees were terminated, and another 175 were reassigned. The recent administrative leaves further escalate tensions within the agency.

What Comes Next

The investigation into the employees’ actions is ongoing. Officials have not disclosed a timeline for its conclusion or potential disciplinary measures. Critics argue the events highlight deeper conflicts over the EPA’s direction under the current administration.
