- Iran has stated it will not retaliate further against U.S. strikes on its nuclear program, while reaffirming its right to uranium enrichment for civilian use. Negotiations between the two nations remain uncertain as calls for diplomacy continue amid heightened tensions.
TEHRAN, Iran (TDR) — Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi announced that the nation will not engage in further retaliation against U.S. military strikes on its nuclear facilities, provided there are no additional acts of aggression. His remarks come as the international community watches closely, with nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran hanging in the balance.
“As long as there is no act of aggression being perpetrated by the United States against us, we will not respond again,” Takht-Ravanchi told NBC News during an interview published on Thursday. He stressed Iran’s openness to dialogue but reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to uranium enrichment within its borders, emphasizing that Iran will not pursue nuclear militarization.
U.S. Strikes Set Back Iran’s Nuclear Program
On June 21, the U.S. military targeted three key Iranian nuclear sites — Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan — following a week of escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. The Israeli strikes and subsequent U.S. actions were part of a broader effort to curtail Iran’s nuclear progress. Iran responded with an attack on the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, though advanced notice allowed Qatar’s defense systems to intercept the strikes, resulting in no casualties.

The Pentagon has since reported that the U.S. strikes have significantly impacted Iran’s nuclear capabilities. “We’re thinking probably closer to two years, like degraded their program by two years,” Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated. However, earlier Defense Intelligence Agency assessments suggested the setback could be as little as a few months.
Negotiations Clouded by Distrust
The U.S. strikes occurred as Washington and Tehran were exploring the possibility of a new nuclear agreement. President Trump withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal in 2018, citing concerns over its effectiveness. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister questioned U.S. motives, saying, “How can we trust the Americans? We want them to explain why they misled us and took such egregious actions against our people.”
Despite the tensions, Takht-Ravanchi reiterated Iran’s preference for diplomacy, emphasizing that “dialogue is essential” to achieving progress on nuclear discussions. However, he underlined the need for greater assurances from the U.S. “The Trump administration has to convince us that they are not going to use military force while we are negotiating,” he added, noting that such assurances are critical for future talks.
Broader Implications for Global Security
The developments underscore the fragile state of U.S.-Iran relations and the broader implications for global security. Iran has consistently defended its right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes under international agreements, while Western nations remain concerned about the potential for weaponization. The uncertainty surrounding Iranian intentions and U.S. policy leaves the future of nuclear diplomacy hanging in the balance.
