• Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene pushes to strip $500 million in aid for “nuclear-armed Israel” from the 2026 NDAA, spotlighting U.S. military spending and foreign policy double standards amid rising taxpayer concerns.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TDR) — Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is seeking to remove $500 million in military aid to Israel from the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), directly referencing Israel’s nuclear weapons—an unusually blunt move that challenges decades of official U.S. policy ambiguity.

In remarks made on Steve Bannon’s War Room podcast, Greene stated, “I’m entering amendments to strike $500 million more for nuclear-armed Israel. And it’s important to say nuclear-armed Israel, because they do have nuclear weapons.”

Challenging Longstanding U.S. Policy

While estimates suggest Israel possesses between 90 and 300 nuclear weapons, the United States has never officially acknowledged Israel’s nuclear arsenal. The long-standing policy of “strategic ambiguity” allows Washington to sidestep legal constraints such as the Symington Amendment, which bars U.S. aid to countries engaging in unsafeguarded nuclear activity.

Greene’s proposal marks a rare congressional challenge to that policy. “We already give them $3.4 billion every single year from the State Department,” she said. “They don’t need another $500 million in our defense budget. That’s for the American people’s defense.”

Under a 2016 memorandum of understanding, the U.S. provides Israel with $3.8 billion annually in military aid—$3.3 billion through the State Department and $500 million for missile defense via the Pentagon.

Rising Aid Scrutiny After 2023 Conflict

Following the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attacks and Israel’s subsequent military response, the U.S. has financed roughly 70% of Israel’s war-related military spending, according to Israeli media. Greene noted this as a burden on U.S. taxpayers, stating, “Nuclear-armed Israel doesn’t need $500 million more from the American people. Our government just bombed Iran on their behalf.”

Broader Push to Slash Foreign Aid

Greene also introduced amendments to eliminate similar funding for Taiwan and Jordan. “Another amendment, $500 million for Taiwan—I’m striking that,” she said, citing Taiwan’s recent $2 billion aid package from the Biden administration. “I’m also entering an amendment to strike $500 million to Jordan. They get $1.6 billion every single year from the State Department.”

The proposed amendments highlight growing divisions in Congress over the scope of U.S. foreign aid, especially amid a $35 trillion national debt and calls for greater accountability in overseas spending.

Is it time for Congress to demand transparency—and limits—on foreign aid to nuclear-armed allies?
