TAMPA, FL (TDR) — Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk delivered a charged rebuke of New York State Assemblyman and mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, calling him a “parasite” and claiming legal immigration itself is part of the problem facing America today.

Speaking Friday at the conservative Student Action Summit in Tampa, Kirk criticized Mamdani’s rise as evidence of a failed immigration system. “You only get Mamdani, you get Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib—not just because of illegal immigration,” Kirk said. “It’s legal immigration that is also the problem.”

Kirk Slams Assimilation, Sparks National Debate

Mamdani, a Muslim immigrant born in Uganda, moved to the U.S. with his family after spending time in South Africa. The 33-year-old recently scored an upset victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary and has championed left-wing policies like rent freezes and free public transit.

Kirk accused Mamdani and similar elected officials of failing to assimilate and undermining American culture: “When you allow a bunch of people into your country legally and they don’t share your values, turns out they don’t always assimilate.”

He doubled down on his position, stating: “He’s a self-righteous, narcissistic parasite on New York City and should be expelled from politics.”

The crowd erupted in cheers as Kirk continued, arguing for a fundamental shift in conservative immigration policy: “Maybe it is time for us to reconsider almost all of our political orthodoxies. Do immigrants really make our country better?”

A Broader Culture War Flashpoint

Kirk clarified that some immigrants—especially Cuban Americans—contribute to American life. But he warned against what he views as cultural incompatibility, referencing Muslim immigrants from Somalia as an example: “America is closed to the third world until further notice.”

Kirk’s rhetoric echoes broader cultural anxieties among parts of the conservative base about assimilation and national identity. Immigration advocates swiftly condemned his remarks as xenophobic and inflammatory.

Mamdani has not yet responded publicly to the comments. He previously described his campaign as a way to “make NYC more livable for working families.”
