• A mass shooting at a Midtown Manhattan office building has left four people dead—including a beloved NYPD officer—and investigators are now reviewing a disturbing suicide note left by the alleged gunman, who reportedly suffered from a degenerative brain condition linked to past football injuries.

NEW YORK, NY (TDR) — A 27-year-old man from Las Vegas opened fire inside a bustling office building on Park Avenue Monday, killing four people, including NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, before turning the gun on himself. One other victim remains in critical condition as investigators work to piece together the killer’s motive.

Gunman Identified, Suicide Note Discovered

Authorities have identified the shooter as Shane Devon Tamura, a former youth football standout, whose violent rampage inside 345 Park Avenue was captured on building security footage. Tamura arrived in a double-parked black BMW, exited with an M4 rifle, and proceeded to an upper floor where he carried out the deadly assault.

Surveillance reportedly shows Tamura firing on five individuals before dying by suicide. The building is home to Blackstone Inc., the NFL’s headquarters, KPMG, and several top law firms.

Investigators found a three-page suicide note left by Tamura at the scene, which reportedly detailed his mental health struggles, potential CTE diagnosis, and a final plea for medical researchers to study his brain after death.

“He asked that his brain be examined for signs of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy,” one law enforcement source told CNN. “He believed CTE was affecting his thoughts and behavior.”

A Fallen Hero: Officer Didarul Islam

The NYPD confirmed that Officer Didarul Islam, a husband, father of two, and expectant father, was among the victims.

“Our hearts are heavy,” said Mayor Eric Adams during a press briefing. “We lost four souls to another senseless act of gun violence, including a member of the New York City Police Department.”

Adams added that Officer Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh, embodied the city’s spirit:

“He protected New Yorkers. He was a man of faith. A true-blue New Yorker.”

The NYPD’s official Twitter account posted, “He represented the very best of our department. He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today.”

Mental Health and CTE Connection

Tamura’s note reportedly referenced his long-term mental health decline, and sources say he had a documented psychiatric history. Investigators are probing whether CTE, a degenerative condition caused by repeated head trauma, played a role in his actions.

According to NBC News, Tamura’s past as a competitive football player is now central to the inquiry. Law enforcement emphasized that the investigation remains active, and no official motive has been disclosed.
