- Senate Majority Leader John Thune signaled he may cancel the August recess to accelerate confirmation of President Trump’s nominees. With key appointments stalled, Thune criticized Democrats for obstructing the process. Trump has urged Republicans to stay in Washington, citing national priorities, including judicial and defense nominations, as reasons to remain in session through summer.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (TDR) — Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota suggested Monday that the chamber may forgo its traditional August recess, aligning with President Trump’s call for urgency in confirming long-delayed nominees.
“We’re thinking about it,” Mr. Thune said at the Capitol. “We want to get as many [nominations] through the pipeline as we can.”
The Senate leader accused Democrats of deviating from precedent by delaying action on even routine confirmations.
“Trump’s the first president in history that hasn’t had a [nomination] adopted by this point in his presidency either by unanimous consent or voice. Not a single one,” Thune noted.

The potential cancellation would serve multiple purposes beyond staffing the administration. Thune said the chamber also hopes to address government funding and the National Defense Authorization Act if lawmakers remain in session.
President Trump directly weighed in via Truth Social, writing:
“Hopefully the very talented John Thune… will cancel August recess (and long weekends!), in order to get my incredible nominees confirmed. We need them badly!!!”
