- Newly released federal records suggest the Chinese Communist Party celebrated Tim Walz’s 2024 VP nomination, reinforcing longstanding concerns about his Beijing ties. The documents, released via FOIA, reveal internal DHS and FBI worries, supported by whistleblower testimony, that China viewed Walz as a strategic political target in Washington.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (TDR) — A cache of previously classified documents released by the Department of Homeland Security under the Trump administration has reignited serious concerns about the Democratic Party’s vetting of vice presidential nominees. The documents, made public on Tuesday following a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit brought by Judicial Watch, reveal that Chinese intelligence services viewed the 2024 nomination of Tim Walz with enthusiastic approval—and potentially as a strategic opening.
According to the records, which span internal DHS and FBI communications from August 2024, American intelligence officials were actively monitoring concerns about Walz’s connections to Beijing at the time Vice President Kamala Harris tapped him as her running mate. One email from a DHS analyst on August 7 noted with startling bluntness, “China is happy.”
Intelligence Red Flags Around the Harris-Walz Ticket
The email correspondence, dated August 6 and 7, 2024, came just as Harris was preparing to name then-Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice presidential pick. Another official, referencing classified feeds, wrote that Walz’s ascension to the ticket aligned with Beijing’s broader influence strategy:
“Watz’s got the Vp. You all have no idea how these feeds into what prc [People’s Republic of China] has been doing here with him and local gov.”

The official continued, “It’s seriously a line of the intel. Target someone who is perceived they can get to DC.”
Such language suggests the Department was actively tracking Chinese soft-power operations involving American local and state leaders. The documents do not conclusively assert Walz was knowingly involved in any wrongdoing, but they underscore how intelligence analysts viewed his proximity to Beijing as a matter of national concern.
From English Teacher to Political Vulnerability
Walz’s background has long included ties to China that, while publicly known, have grown more controversial under scrutiny. Before entering politics, Walz taught English in China and later oversaw numerous trade and education delegations to the country. He has often cited his China trips as a strength in global diplomacy, but critics say these repeated contacts made him vulnerable to foreign influence.
“This speaks too to the rin [raw intelligence] you reviewed for us,” one DHS official wrote, highlighting unevaluated intelligence data that further reinforced Beijing’s interest in Walz.

Other communications noted that the FBI was “leading a couple of things,” though concerns about the jurisdictional hurdles within the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals—often criticized by conservatives for perceived leniency—may have limited the scope of the inquiry.
Whistleblower Warning, Ignored?
According to testimony presented before the House Oversight Committee, a DHS whistleblower stated that Chinese operatives regarded Walz as a “target” and “someone they can get to D.C.” The newly released emails appear to corroborate that characterization and raise deeper questions about whether Democratic leadership ignored or dismissed such warnings.
Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton called the disclosures “deeply troubling” and indicative of a “larger pattern of foreign powers exploiting our political vulnerabilities.”
Fallout and Political Consequences
Walz, who lost alongside Harris in the 2024 election to President Donald Trump and Senator JD Vance, has not responded publicly to the revelations. Yet the implications stretch beyond electoral defeat. They touch on questions of national loyalty, foreign infiltration, and the adequacy of internal government safeguards against adversarial influence.
If Beijing saw Tim Walz as a political opportunity, what other doors to American power might still stand open?
