JERUSALEM (TDR) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday described a deadly strike on a Gaza hospital as a “tragic mishap” after at least 20 people, including five journalists, were killed during Israeli Defense Forces operations.

Netanyahu Responds to Hospital Strike

In a public statement, Netanyahu insisted Israel “values the work of journalists, medical staff and all civilians,” and confirmed an investigation had been launched into the incident. The strike hit Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis twice on Monday, with the second strike killing rescue workers and reporters who had rushed to the scene.

Local health officials reported dozens wounded. Among the dead was Mariam Dagga, a 33-year-old visual journalist who worked with The Associated Press and other outlets. Dagga had recently covered the struggle of doctors trying to save children amid Gaza’s famine.

The five journalists killed also included freelancers for Reuters and Al Jazeera, marking one of the deadliest days for media in the war since Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel.

“This killing of journalists in Gaza continues while the world watches and fails to act firmly,” said Sara Qudah, regional director of the Committee to Protect Journalists. “These murders must end now.”

U.S. Response and International Pressure

President Donald Trump said he was not initially aware of the strikes but added: “I’m not happy about it. I don’t want to see it.” His comments came amid heightened concern that Israel’s military escalation risks further civilian loss and deepens international isolation.

The hospital attack follows weeks after an Israeli strike killed journalist Anas Al-Sharif, another blow to media freedom in Gaza. Israel defended that earlier strike by claiming Al-Sharif had Hamas ties, which Al Jazeera firmly denied.

The Israel Defense Forces stated that it is investigating the latest strike as it prepares for a potential offensive to seize Gaza City, a move expected to worsen civilian suffering and increase risks for the remaining Israeli hostages still held by Hamas. Netanyahu faces pressure from both his domestic critics and international partners to recalibrate Israel’s military strategy.

Hamas leaders condemned the hospital bombing as a “war crime,” while humanitarian organizations again urged the International Criminal Court to step in.

The longer Israel pushes into Gaza without limits, the more it risks sacrificing legitimacy on the world stage.
