- He criticized GOP stances on health care, guns, and immigration.
- Duncan says his switch helps him better “love my neighbor.”
ATLANTA, GA (TDR) — Former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan announced his move to the Democratic Party, saying his decision “has been coming for a while” and predates President Trump’s attempts to steal the 2020 presidential election.
Background and Break with the GOP
In an op-ed for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Duncan wrote there’s no single moment that flipped his allegiance but that he struggled daily to love my neighbor under GOP policies. He first drew GOP ire after denouncing Trump’s post-2020 election maneuvers and later was expelled from the party for endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris and speaking at the Democratic National Convention.

Duncan slammed Republicans’ approach to health care, arguing that working Georgians often have the “wrong job” that doesn’t provide coverage. He warned that Trump’s tax and spending bill will leave Medicaid funding “in shambles” and criticized cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which he said risks leaving children hungry at school.
Gun Control and Immigration
Citing polls, Duncan endorsed universal background checks and red flag laws. He denounced current immigration policies as failing to “love your neighbor,” and proposed securing the border, deporting felons, and creating a path to citizenship for others.
Political Fallout
Duncan’s switch follows his decision not to seek reelection in 2022 and months after the Georgia GOP ousted him. He has been a sharp critic of Trump, especially after the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack. He joins a small but growing list of former Republicans—like Joe Walsh and David Jolly—who have flipped blue this year.
“The list of reasons why I’m now a Democrat continues to grow,” Duncan wrote. “Most importantly, my decision puts me in the best possible position each day to love my neighbor.”
